Using Sunscreen Daily: Discover a sunscreen for your lifestyle and skin tone

As summer continues to shine brightly, the importance of sunscreen cannot be overstated. Despite widespread knowledge of the benefits of sun protection, recent statistics reveal that only 12% of men wear sunscreen daily. Furthermore, less than one-third of Black and Latina people wear sunscreen daily. These numbers highlight a critical need for increased awareness and better sun safety practices across all demographics.

The key is finding a sunscreen that fits your lifestyle and your skin tone. Selecting the right sunscreen is crucial. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. SPF 30 or higher is recommended for adequate protection. Victoria Barbosa MD, MPH, MBA, president of the Skin of Color Society, provided helpful suggestions for the daily use of sunscreen during her talk with Hansa Bhargava, MD with Healio.

Daily moisturizer: Incorporate sunscreen into your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth. UV rays can damage your skin even on cloudy days and through windows. A daily moisturizer with SPF can help make it a habit to apply sunscreen daily.

CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30: Provides all day hydration and broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen protection from UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause aging. UVB rays cause burning.

Ultra-light sunscreen: Men often prefer ultra-light formulas that are non-greasy and quickly absorbed. These options make daily application more convenient and comfortable.

Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 Face Sunscreen: An oil free sunscreen made with Zinc Oxide. It is lightweight and silky and helps calm and protect sensitive skin types prone to acne, rosacea and discoloration.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen SPF 30: This Broad Spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen lotion with Dry-Touch technology absorbs fast for a clean, ultra-light feel and non-shiny finish.

Tinted Mineral Sunscreen: There’s a misconception that darker skin tones don’t need sunscreen. While melanin provides some natural protection, it’s not enough to prevent damage from UV rays. Skin cancer can affect anyone, and it’s often diagnosed at later stages in Black and Latina people, making prevention even more critical. People with tan, olive, or brown skin can benefit from tinted mineral sunscreens that protect against both UV and visible light.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Tinted Mineral Ultra Light Face Sunscreen SPF 50: 100% advanced mineral face sunscreen. Sensitive skin sunscreen with broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection SPF 50. Fast absorbing, non whitening, non greasy zinc oxide sunscreen.

EltaMD UV Daily SPF 40 Tinted Face Moisturizer: Provides superior hydration and effective sun protection for your skin. This non-greasy, SPF moisturizer face lotion rubs in easily and does not leave a white cast. Select Deep Tinted or Tinted.

Athletes: For those who are active or spend a lot of time outdoors, sports formulas are ideal. They are designed to be sweat-resistant and stay put during physical activities.

Thinksport SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen: Safe, natural sunblock for sports & active use. It is water resistant, vegan and reef friendly sun lotion.

Makeup Users: If you wear makeup, consider using a powder sunscreen to reapply throughout the day without disturbing your makeup. These powders are easy to apply and offer additional protection.

Supergoop! (Re)Setting 100% Mineral Powder, Translucent, SPF 35: A mineral setting powder that mattifies shine, sets makeup & applies sunscreen.

bareMinerals Loose Powder Foundation SPF 15: Lightweight, skin-improving mineral foundation that provides buildable sheer-to-full coverage with a natural, luminous finish. Available in 20+ shades.

By making sunscreen a regular part of your daily routine, you can enjoy the sun safely and reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer. Remember, sun protection is essential for everyone, regardless of gender or skin tone. Stay sun-smart and keep your skin healthy!
